Optical And Standard Representations of the Fourier Transform

The FFT of an image is periodic and conjugate-symmetric, equation 1 and 2 respectively. The FFT therefore has two possible representations, standard and optical.

periodic:
conjugate-symmetric:

With the optical Fourier transform the low frequencies are grouped together in the centre of the Fourier domain whilst the higher frequencies are at the edges. The DC component is at the centre of the domain. The four quadrants are diametrically opposite in the standard representation.
