My Background
I studied for my bachelors degree in Electronics at the University of Southampton and remained there for a PhD in Control Engineering. I then took a "gap year" working as a lecturer in the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, before returning to Southampton as a Research Fellow working on Human Factors.
I then moved to the University of Warwick to begin what has turned out to be a more than 30 year post as a lecturer and then an Associate Professor within its School of Engineering. During this time I have worked on a wide range of research projects based initially on the industrial use of microcomputers and later on Safety Critical Systems. During my time at Warwick I have become a fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS), a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a European Engineer (Eur Ing).
During my time at Warwick I have produced a large number of research papers and have presented many of these at conferences throughout the world. I have also authored several text books in the area of Electronics and Safety Critical Systems.
In addition to my University work I am also the Managing Director of Embedded Systems Limited, a computer company specialising in the production of custom control and instrumentation systems. This "side line" is done with the full approval of the University which encourages its staff to have close links with industry. The company has enabled me to get involved in a wide range of fascinating projects that would not have been possible through my role as an academic. Some of these projects are described on the company's website.
A couple of years ago I gave up undergraduate teaching and now hold the post of Director of International Recruitment for the School of Engineering. This role involves travelling throughout the world to develop links with other internationally renown universities and to recruit international students.
