We work in the Electronic Communication Systems laboratory, A205, and involved in research concerning both mobile- and fixed networks, and related subjects. The mobile communications area is particularly important, as evidenced by the recent spectrum auctions in the UK, amounting to more than £22Bn.
The mobile systems have to interact with fixed networks, and that is why radio over fibre is an attractive subject for academic research, and work done in collaboration with industry. Recent work is investigating microwave + optical LANs, and optical wireless to accommodate the necessary microwave bandwidths.
The ROMIN project concerns mobile multimedia integrated into external optical networks. This involves development of new technologies, including the optical antenna, and specialised optical protocol systems.
