Existing Technical Applications for Holography Include:
Areas of Current development/interestThe use of holography covers many areas and consequently the paths of investigation being pursued are numerous but the most well documented at the moment include the following: Real-time Holography, where the results can be immediately be seen, is an area of a great deal of development. This has gone along hand-in-hand with advances in computing power available, the most common arrangement is for the traditional camera and film to be replaced by a C.C.T.V. camera with high resolution and directly linking it to a computer and VDU. Closely linked to Real-time Holography is another area of current research, that of Tomographic Reconstruction which is the production of software and algorithms that are capable of analysing interferometric holograms quickly and with the minimum of specialist assistance. These are particularly commercially viable applications as it will allow holography to be more approachable to smaller less well resourced companies as they wouldn't need specialist staff.
A final field that is linked to the development of real-time holography is the research
of different recording materials, a search for high quality, economical, fully erasable
film material that requires little or no development has now been underway for a long
time.
Possibility of encoding Holographic imagesEncoding holographic images allows the automatic analysis software already developed by the OEL to process the holographic information. The possibility of high density encoding of holograms is explained here. The selection of a particular hologram from an array of holograms is made by a X-Y beam deflector. The real image reconstructed from the selected hologram is projected onto a matrix of photo-transistors. The outputs from the photo-transistors are connected to the electronic circuits of the computer. A high density recording is achieved through the use of Fourier transform hologram. |
